Sometimes Your Body Needs More Challenge

If you’ve taken class with us for a while, you’ve probably noticed that sometimes we add a lot of spring tension to an exercise.

And sometimes someone rolls their eyes and looks at us like… are you sure about this??

But there’s actually a really good reason for it.

Your muscles, bones, and connective tissues adapt to the demands you place on them. If the load is always the same, your body doesn’t get much of a signal to change. In other words, it gets very good at staying exactly the same and not progressing. 😮

That’s why occasionally working with heavier springs (depending on the exercise) is important. On our reformers, the red springs are the heaviest, the blue spring is medium, and the white spring is the lightest. Each one creates a different level of resistance, which lets you gradually challenge your body in safe, controlled ways.

That added spring tension helps build strength, improve joint stability, and support bone health. It also helps your body become more capable in everyday life — carrying groceries, climbing stairs, gardening, playing golf, or keeping up with your kids or grandkids.

Modern life already gives most of us PLENTY of under-loading. We sit more, move less, and rarely challenge our muscles in meaningful ways. Our studio is a place where we can safely challenge our bodies again. 🩵

That said, you are always in charge of your springs. We may suggest a certain setup, but if something doesn’t feel right in your body, you can always change it. Add or remove a spring so the exercise feels appropriate for you.

Our goal is to help you feel stronger and move better in everyday life — not just during your Pilates class.
