Your Glutes Are A Big Deal

The New York Times recently published an article about glute strength being the unsung hero of longevity.

Not because of how your bum looks — but because of what it does for you.

The article explained that strong glutes are one of the biggest predictors of healthy aging and independence. Your glutes help you climb stairs, get up from chairs, carry groceries, maintain balance, and keep pressure off the knees and lower back. In other words? They help you keep doing life.

One physical therapist in the article put it bluntly:
“Do you want to get off the toilet?”

The problem is that modern life doesn’t ask much of our glutes. We sit more and move less. And over time, those muscles stop doing their job as well as they should. That’s when people often start noticing tight hips, achy backs, knee discomfort, poor posture, or feeling less steady on their feet.

This is one of the reasons we spend so much time strengthening the back side of the body in Pilates. Bridges. Footwork. Lunges. Standing work. Jumpboard. Heavy springs. All of it matters.

And while stronger glutes might make your jeans fit better, the bigger win is this: feeling capable in your body for years to come.
